Friends of the Columbia Gorge is a Portland-based nonprofit dedicated to protecting the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area. As the only conservation organization focused exclusively on this region, it pursues a blend of grassroots advocacy, strategic land purchases, and public education to safeguard the Gorge's scenic, natural, cultural, and recreational resources. For almost four decades, the group has operated with a relatively small staff to advance its mission. In 2026, the organization announced a leadership transition, naming Gabe Sheoships as executive director effective May 1, 2026, following the retirement of longtime leader Kevin Gorman who had served since 1998. The organization has also pursued partnerships to support its work, including a 2025 joint fundraising effort with United Way of the Columbia Gorge to assist families affected by the Rowena and Burdoin Fires.
