Gabrielino High School was established in 1994 and was named after the Gabrielino Indians of the Tongva tribe that originally built the historic San Gabriel Mission. 

Gabrielino High School is dedicated to academic success and offers a wide range of academic courses and extracurricular activities. In 2001, Gabrielino’s academic success in standardized testing earned the school the title “California Distinguished School” by the state of California. In February 2011, Gabrielino received a six-year term of accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). And in 2008, U.S. News and World Report named Gabrielino High School as a silver medal school in its “America’s Best High Schools” list. With an enrollment of 1,774 students in grades nine through twelve, students pride themselves on their individuality, yet enjoy being part of a school with traditions and great accomplishments in the short period of time the school has operated.

San Gabriel is located in Southern California’s San Gabriel Valley and is 10 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. Founded by Father Junipero Serra in 1771, the Mission San Gabriel Arcangel, “Pride of the California Missions,” and a California State historical landmark, is considered the birthplace of the Los Angeles region.

San Gabriel was established as a general law city on April 24, 1913 with a population of 1,500. Today, the city boasts a population of 40,000, representing many diverse religions, cultures, and ethnicities.
