The Gender Equality Law Center (GELC) is a Brooklyn-based non-profit law firm and advocacy organization. GELC is committed to advancing laws and policies that promote gender equality in all spheres of public and private life. Our focus is on breaking down barriers that limit economic and social opportunities for individuals on the basis of gender, gender identity, gender expression and/or sexual orientation. GELC provides direct services to individuals who contact the organization through our confidential legal hotline, our website, or through word of mouth referrals. This includes counseling and advice that includes know your rights information so that individuals can self advocate for themselves. It also includes referrals to private counsel and government sponsored legal services, as well as to a variety of non-legal organizations for further assistance. One of the most important aspects of GELC's work is to litigate on behalf of individuals and groups of individuals seeking to redress the harms caused by gender-based discrimination. GELC litigates cases that will result in both redressing these harms through monetary compensation for the clients, but also that seeks to create systemic change within institutions and/or to create legal precedent that will impact protections for future employees, students and others. GELC's work also includes legislative and policy initiatives to expand protections for workers, students and others seeking equal chances to obtain economic and social opportunities. Much of GELC's legislative and policy work is done in conjuction with our national partners and impacts individuals nationwide.
