The German Marshall Fund of the United States is a nonpartisan American public policy and grantmaking institution focused on fostering understanding and cooperation between North America and Europe on transatlantic and global issues. It supports individuals and institutions operating in the transatlantic space, convenes leaders from policy and business communities, provides research and analysis on transatlantic topics, and offers exchange opportunities to deepen engagement. The organization also advances initiatives aimed at strengthening democracies. Founded in 1972 as a permanent memorial to Marshall Plan assistance and funded by Germany, GMF is headquartered in Washington, D.C., with six European offices in Berlin, Paris, Brussels, Belgrade, Ankara, and Bucharest, plus smaller representations in Bratislava, Turin, and Stockholm. In 2026, GMF announced leadership appointments, including the addition of Sophia Besch as research director and managing director for transatlantic security, effective September 2026.
