Gift of Life Michigan is a nonprofit organization in the hospitals and health care sector that acts as Michigan's federally designated program for organ and tissue recovery. It operates around the clock as a liaison among potential donors, hospitals, and transplant centers to coordinate the donation process. The organization recovers more than 900 organs each year from over 300 donors, collects bone, skin and other tissues from roughly 1,000 donors, and collaborates with Eversight Michigan to facilitate cornea and eye donation. The nonprofit maintains the Michigan Organ Donor Registry in collaboration with the Michigan Secretary of State, a confidential database of residents who have indicated a desire to donate organs, eyes, and tissues. Founded in 1971 by Michigan transplant surgeons to create a network for sharing kidneys, Gift of Life Michigan is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
