Global Empowerment Mission is a mid-sized nonprofit headquartered in Doral, Florida, focused on delivering aid quickly and at minimal cost to donors. Founded by Michael Capponi, the organization has supported more than 300 missions across 40 countries and all U.S. states and Caribbean territories, with early work spanning crises from Kosovo in 1999 to Ukraine more recently. Over time, GEM expanded from immediate relief to include sustainable development efforts, such as reconstructing homes and schools and creating livelihood opportunities. In 2017 it joined Bethenny Frankel’s BStrong initiative, distributing unrestricted cash cards to beneficiaries to meet individual needs. GEM pursues a 360-degree approach that aims to shorten the time communities spend in the gap between disaster response and long-term recovery. It has demonstrated progress in reducing the sustainability cycle, moving from a multi-year period in Haiti to roughly one year in the Bahamas. More recently, the organization has engaged in partnerships and events to broaden its reach, such as hosting a Hurricane Preparedness Summit in June 2026 to coordinate readiness with officials and humanitarian partners.
