GNS Science is a government-owned New Zealand research institute that studies geological resources, environmental and industrial isotopes, and natural hazards. It applies scientific understanding across scales—from atomic processes to planetary systems—to support wealth creation, environmental protection, and public safety. As a limited liability company with an independent Board of Directors, it maintains autonomy to pursue national-level science and delivers work across basic research, product development, and consultancy for both public and private sectors, domestically and internationally. Based in Lower Hutt, Wellington region, the organization employs several hundred people and serves both public-sector agencies and private clients. Notable recent outputs include the second version of the New Zealand Active Faults Database, released in December 2024, and land-use planning guidance to reduce landslide risk. It also pursues international collaboration, such as a partnership with The Australian National University to advance seismic surveying techniques.
