The Goethe-Institut e.V. operates as Germany's cultural institute with a worldwide scope. It promotes knowledge of the German language abroad and supports international cultural cooperation, while providing information about German culture, society, and political life to present a fuller image of the country. Through its cultural and educational programs, it encourages intercultural dialogue, supports cultural participation, strengthens civil society structures, and fosters worldwide mobility. The organization maintains a network of Goethe-Instituts, Goethe Centres, cultural societies, reading rooms and language learning centres, serving as a primary point of contact for many people engaging with Germany for more than sixty years. It operates independently and without political ties, underpinned by partnerships with leading institutions and individuals across hundreds of countries. Based in Munich, Bavaria, it is a sizable nonprofit, and in 2026 it expanded its facilities with a new German cultural centre in Dakar, Senegal.
