Gold Standard operates as a standard-setting body focused on maximizing the impact of climate and development activities. It designs processes that amplify outcomes in clean energy, water access, and the responsible management of land and forests, with outcomes verified to build confidence and attract investment. Founded in 2003 by WWF and other NGOs, the organization is ISEAL Code Compliant and supported by a broad NGO network. It has more than 3,400 projects across over 100 countries, illustrating its global reach in the environmental services space, and is based in Geneva, Canton of Geneva. In May 2026, Gold Standard announced a next-generation Impact Registry developed with Trovio to modernize the system for issuing, transferring and retiring Gold Standard carbon credits.
