Founded in 1972, Grand Rapids Ballet operates as Michigan's only professional ballet company. Under the direction of James Sofranko, a former San Francisco Ballet dancer, the company has broadened its repertoire to include contemporary works by notable choreographers. The ensemble rehearses at its own Meijer-Royce Center for Dance and performs at the Peter Martin Wege Theatre in downtown Grand Rapids. In addition to the main company, GRB runs a ballet school for students aged three and up and a Junior Company that emphasizes technique, discipline, and growth in a nurturing environment. The organization serves dance enthusiasts and aspiring dancers, delivering performances across a range of styles drawn from 20th and 21st century choreography. A recent development includes a partnership with Athletico Physical Therapy announced for the 2023-24 season.
