Great Lakes Theater is a professional classical theater company based in Cleveland, Ohio, serving northeast Ohio since 1962. Its seasons run from September through May, presenting world-class plays with a resident company of artists at the Hanna Theatre in PlayhouseSquare, and it stages an annual A Christmas Carol at the Ohio Theatre. The organization combines on-stage programming with extensive educational outreach, reaching more than 75,000 adults and students each season. Under Producing Artistic Director Charles Fee, GLT has developed a nationally recognized producing partnership with the Idaho Shakespeare Festival and Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, featuring shared seasons with a single resident artistic company and thirty joint productions over eight seasons. In 2008, the company opened its reimagined Hanna Theatre following a capital campaign of $19.2 million, updating the venue with contemporary design and technology. A recent development, announced in May 2026, is a partnership with Play On Shakespeare, a nonprofit commissioning contemporary verse translations of Shakespeare, joining GLT with ISF and LTSF in this initiative.
