Great Western Drilling Company is a privately held oil and gas company founded in 1936 and based in Midland, Texas. Originally engaged in exploration and production and at one time one of the largest contract drilling outfits in the United States, it redirected its focus toward expanding its own production to become a major independent producer. Today it operates across eight states, with offices in Midland, Fort Worth, Odessa, Sundown and Mentone in Texas, and Farmington and Lovington in New Mexico. The company holds working interests in more than 400 producing properties, with roughly half operated by the company, and it has a long history of secondary recovery work, including waterfloods in the Permian Basin and Mid-Continent regions. Its objectives include increasing reserves through exploration, development and acquisitions while managing production costs to maximize recoverable reserves.
