The Green Building Council South Africa (GBCSA) is based in Cape Town in the Western Cape and is an independent non-profit established in 2007 to advance green building within South Africa's commercial property sector. It promotes energy- and resource-efficient, environmentally responsible design, construction, and operation, with the aim of reducing environmental impact while creating healthier, more productive spaces for occupants. The organization supports its mission by raising awareness, developing a national green building rating system, delivering education, and providing knowledge and resources to help practitioners implement green building. As a full member of the World Green Building Council, GBCSA sits within a global network focused on sustainable built environments. Its activities target developers, owners, designers, engineers, and other professionals in South Africa's property and construction industries, offering market-based solutions to climate and resource challenges. In May 2026, GBCSA participated in the Women in Green Building Competition in partnership with the International Finance Corporation.
