The Greenlawn Fire Department, established in 1902, is a fully volunteer organization serving the Greenlawn community in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. With 125 active members, the department responds to over 2,800 alarms annually, providing fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical services across a diverse 7-square-mile district that includes residential areas, schools, healthcare facilities, and industrial zones . 

Mission & Operations

GFD operates from two stations: Headquarters at 23 Boulevard Ave and Station #1 on Little Plains Road. The department comprises several specialized units, including Columbia Hook & Ladder Company No. 1, Engine Company No. 1, Hose Company No. 1, and a Rescue Squad. These units are equipped with modern apparatus, such as Ferrara and Pierce fire engines, ambulances, and ladder trucks, to effectively respond to emergencies .   

Community Engagement

Beyond emergency response, GFD is deeply involved in community outreach. The department hosts the annual Fireman’s Fair, a tradition since 1906, recognized as the oldest and largest in New York State . Additionally, the Juniors program offers youths aged 13–17 hands-on experience in fire and EMS services, fostering leadership and community service .   

Leadership

The department is led by Chief Joseph Pace, supported by Assistant Chiefs Richard Jones, Matthew Paulsen, and Christian Schumacher . A publicly elected Board of Fire Commissioners oversees the district’s operations, ensuring resources and training for all volunteer members .  

Legacy & Commitment

Throughout its history, GFD has demonstrated unwavering dedication, notably during events like the 9/11 attacks, Superstorm Sandy, and the COVID-19 pandemic. The department’s commitment to service, training, and community involvement underscores its role as a cornerstone of the Greenlawn community .
