Habib Bank Limited, commonly known as HBL, is a Karachi-based bank in Sindh, Pakistan, founded in 1947 as the country’s first commercial bank. It has grown into the largest private sector bank in Pakistan, with more than 1,450 branches and over five million customer relationships, offering Retail and Consumer Banking, Corporate Banking, and Investment Banking—including SME and Agriculture lending—and its 2004 privatization assigned AKFED a 51% stake. The bank has an expansive international footprint, operating in 25 countries with subsidiaries in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom, affiliates in Nepal, Nigeria, Kenya, and Kyrgyzstan, and representative offices in Iran and China. In 2025, HBL pursued strategic partnerships to advance sustainable finance, such as collaborating with LUMS to develop commercial financing models for electric mobility.
