Harborview Medical Center is a major hospital and teaching clinical care site in Seattle, Washington, operating within UW Medicine. The institution began in 1877 as King County Hospital, relocated to its current Puget Sound–facing site in 1931, and was renamed Harborview Medical Center. As part of an academic medical center, Harborview has expanded with new facilities funded through bonds and internal reserves, including the Norm Maleng Building (opened 2008) and the Ninth & Jefferson Building (opened 2009). The center serves a broad patient population and functions as a key teaching and clinical care hub within UW Medicine. A notable recent development is UW Medicine’s May 2026 collaboration with GE Healthcare to advance diagnostic imaging and personalized care at Harborview and affiliated institutions.
