Harlem United is a New York-based nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing health equity. Founded in 1988 by activists in a church basement to support people dying of AIDS amid stigma, it has since expanded to provide comprehensive HIV care and a broad set of health services. The organization structures its programs into Health Services, Housing, Harm Reduction, and Supportive Services to serve vulnerable populations with medical, behavioral, dental, and specialty care, housing options, infectious disease prevention, substance-use services, case management, and nutrition and education. Harlem United serves clients who face social and institutional barriers, focusing on people living with HIV/AIDS who are homeless or who experience mental illness, substance use, or stigma related to sexuality or HIV status in Harlem. The organization reports substantial impact, housing more than 600 formerly homeless individuals each year and delivering about 21,000 medical visits along with over 18,000 meals and pantry support. In 2023, Harlem United announced a partnership with the RTW Charitable Foundation to further its collaborative efforts.
