Hawaii Gas is a mid-sized utility based in Honolulu, Hawaii, with a history dating to 1904 as the islands’ only franchised gas company. It has built and maintains gas pipeline infrastructure and employs a skilled workforce across the major islands. The company produces synthetic natural gas by blending renewable natural gas and up to 15% hydrogen for Oahu customers, and distributes liquefied petroleum gas to communities statewide. Through these operations, it supplies energy for residential, commercial, and industrial customers as part of Hawaii’s fuel mix, offering a cleaner, lower-cost, and safe alternative. In 2022 Hawaii Gas partnered with Oceanit Laboratories and the U.S. Department of Energy to pilot technology aimed at safely transporting hydrogen through the existing natural gas infrastructure.
