As an ICU physician, founder Marie Pavini MD watched as patient lives were negatively affected by physical and chemical restraint, and realized we need better tools. Bedside sitters and e-sitters only served to dominate, victimize, and scare patients and were not able to assure safety. Through NIH funding and research, the Exersides® Refraint® was developed, tested, and shown to be safe and effective, and HD Medical was born. In subsequent years, the company grew its family of products and today continues in research and development, engineering products that enable patients, caregivers, and family members to use common sense to solve common problems. HDmedical was named SBA Manufacturer of the Year New England 2024.

 

The Exersides® Refraint® is the least restrictive, safe, all-in-one restraint alternative. Named to describe a device worn on the arms that allows a patient to refrain from entangling in tubes/lines while moving and enjoying safe freedom and dignity, it is the only device of its kind.

 

Also available is a virtual reality app for medical staff and nursing/medical students known as DelTrain™ VR that allows the User to enter into the body of a patient to experience empathy, and then into the body of the Caregiver to review best practice as they learn about such topics as Delirium and Early Mobility.

 

HDmedical’s complete education course called A+O x 3™ (from the medical jargon meaning ‘Alert and Oriented x person/place/time’) combines remote, in-person, simulation lab, virtual reality, and helpful tools, as well as a confidential policy auditing, to integrate hospital systems, committees, administrators, and patient care teams for more streamlined movement toward unified goals.
