The Health Economics and Epidemiology Research Office (HE²RO) is a division within the Wits Health Consortium, the research arm of the University of the Witwatersrand. Based in Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa, it conducts applied research and evaluation aimed at informing public health policy and programs. It was established in 2004 through a collaboration between WHC and Boston University's Center for Global Health and Development, and it centers on understanding the economic and epidemiological effects of HIV and TB and on evaluating interventions' effectiveness, benefits, and costs. HE²RO responds to requests for information and technical assistance from stakeholders such as the National Department of Health, National Health Laboratory Service, provincial health departments, PEPFAR partners, and healthcare providers, delivering answers with immediate practical relevance. In July 2025, the organization participated in the IAS Conference, presenting its work through presentations, posters, and satellite sessions.
