Health Sciences South Carolina (HSSC) is an inclusive public-private collaboration that brings together leading research universities, health systems, and other partners to advance clinical research, population health, quality, and data exchange initiatives. Founded as the nation’s first statewide health data and research collaborative, the organization operates across South Carolina with a network that includes Clemson University, the Medical University of South Carolina, and the University of South Carolina, alongside six of the state's largest healthcare systems. Through this consortium, HSSC seeks to transform public health and economic wellbeing by aligning research, clinical practice, and data-enabled innovation. Based in Columbia, South Carolina, HSSC was established in 2004 and functions as a small-scale organization coordinating a broad ecosystem of collaborators. It also supports research excellence beyond its core members by funding 12 South Carolina Centers of Economic Excellence, whose work aims to yield new products and services that improve public health while fostering economic development and job creation in the state. In 2021, HSSC helped launch VACTRAC, an interoperable health information technology platform designed to accelerate COVID-19 vaccination efforts in South Carolina, highlighting its role in data-driven health initiatives.
