H.E.R.O. for Children, Inc. is a small nonprofit based in the Atlanta area, operating in the individual and family services sector. Founded in 2003, it aims to improve the quality of life for children infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS through programs and community connections, all provided at no cost. The organization offers a range of programs, including mentoring (Super HEROes), life skills (Rising HEROes), a summer camp (Camp High Five), a holiday gift outreach (Holiday of HEROes), and Bright HEROes, an educational enrichment scholarship. It serves more than 350 children aged 6 to 21 in metropolitan Atlanta, delivering about 18,000 hours of care annually with the help of volunteers. The majority of those served live in Fulton or DeKalb counties, with roughly one-third HIV positive, two-thirds affected, about 25% having lost a parent to HIV/AIDS-related causes, and nearly 90% coming from households earning around $15,000 per year or less.
