Holy Names University, based in Oakland, California, traces its roots to 1868 when the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary established the institution on the shore of Lake Merritt. After ending its academic operations in 2023, the entity reorganized as The Legacy Funds of Holy Names University to provide scholarships for Bay Area students, with priority given to Oakland residents pursuing a four-year college education in California. During the 2020s, the organization pursued program development and partnerships to support its mission. In 2021, HNU launched a Doctor of Nursing Practice program to address leadership needs in nursing and healthcare. In late 2022, it announced a partnership to offer degree completion pathways for students at a partner college.
