The Houston Geological Society (HGS) serves as a professional community for geoscience professionals, educators, students, and earth science enthusiasts in the Houston metropolitan area. Its members come from geology, geophysics, and engineering, and include active groups such as NeoGeos for young professionals and the Northsiders to accommodate members in the spread-out community. The society offers technical lunch and dinner meetings, field trips, continuing education courses, and publications to support ongoing learning. HGS is governed by a membership-elected Board of Directors, with a small staff and a broad volunteer network. It maintains two scholarship funds to recognize outstanding students from Texas universities and has been affiliated with the AAPG since 1932. The organization has hosted AAPG and GCAGS conventions in the Houston area on multiple occasions and collaborates with related groups such as the Geophysical Society of Houston and SIPES to share geological information and promote professional interaction.
