IDA is a not-for-profit corporation based in Alexandria, Virginia, just outside Washington, DC, that operates three Federally Funded Research and Development Centers to serve the public interest. The centers are the Systems and Analyses Center, the Science and Technology Policy Institute, and the Center for Communications and Computing. Since 1956, its mission has been to bring leading scientific, technical, and analytic talent to issues critical to U.S. national security, in a research environment free of commercial or shareholder interests. Its sponsors rely on dispassionate, fact-based, scientifically rigorous research and advice to inform decisions, and IDA leverages a unique position that grants access to highly classified and sensitive information while maintaining strict conflict-of-interest controls to preserve objectivity. IDA emphasizes a diverse staff with broad expertise across technologies, costs, policies, operations, and organizational matters, and it continually renews its workforce with new researchers and experienced professionals in defense-related roles. In 2022, the organization opened a new headquarters area at Potomac Yard and appointed Laura Baldwin as vice president, effective November 14, 2022.
