The Idaho Department of Lands is a state government agency in Idaho that administers land resources through 16 offices across the state. It manages about 2.5 million acres of state endowment trust land with a constitutional mandate to maximize long-term financial returns for state institutions, principally public schools. The department also oversees Idaho’s public trust lands, including lands beneath navigable waterways, riverbeds, and the beds and banks of Idaho’s navigable lakes, and regulates forestry practices and portions of the mining industry. It provides forestry programs and fire protection and prevention across more than 6 million acres, supported by a centralized services division that handles technical, fiscal, records, procurement, and information systems functions from its Boise headquarters and in Coeur d’Alene. Operating under the directives of the Land Board, the department also houses the Oil and Gas Division as the administrative arm of the Idaho Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, reflecting its role as a regulatory and management authority in Idaho.
