Idaho National Laboratory is a science-based, applied engineering national laboratory that supports the U.S. Department of Energy's missions in energy research, nuclear science, and national defense. Located in Idaho Falls, Idaho, the INL Site covers about 890 square miles (569,135 acres), roughly 85 percent the size of Rhode Island. Founded in 1949, INL operates facilities including the Advanced Test Reactor National Scientific User Facility. In addition to nuclear research, the lab conducts programs in robotics, wind power, high-performance computing, biofuels, critical infrastructure protection, carbon management, and advanced vehicle testing as part of its multifaceted research portfolio. The organization employs between 1,001 and 5,000 people.
