ILGA World operates as a global federation of LGBTQI+ civil society organizations working to advance human rights and equality for people of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, expressions, and sex characteristics. The network comprises more than 2,000 member organizations spanning more than 170 countries and territories, coordinating advocacy and knowledge sharing across the movement. Regional activity is organized across six zones—Pan Africa ILGA, ILGA Asia, ILGA-Europe, ILGALAC, ILGA North America, and ILGA Oceania—and governance is provided by an elected board of 19 activists. Founded in 1978 and based in Geneva, Canton of Geneva, ILGA World holds consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council. Functioning as an international nonprofit in the civic and social sector, it employs a mid-sized staff to coordinate global campaigns and policy work. In 2025, ILGA World released new data and maps illustrating how laws affect LGBTIQ+ communities around the world, a resource intended to inform advocacy and policy reform.
