The Independent Schools Council (ISC) coordinates seven associations of independent schools, together with their heads, bursars and governors, to guide sector priorities. Through these member associations it represents more than 1,370 independent schools in the UK and overseas, educating over 537,000 children each year. Based in London, England, the organization operates with a small professional team supported by expert advisory groups, with governance by a board led by chairman Mark Taylor to protect and promote the sector. ISC's activities span six principal areas, including independent sector research and intelligence, legal and regulatory guidance, and online resources that inform parental decisions. It also conducts sector-wide communications, provides a central meeting place for members in London, and engages in public affairs and parliamentary advocacy. In October 2024, the ISC announced the appointment of Carmen Powell as CEO, marking a recent leadership development.
