Founded in 1830, the Indiana Historical Society is a private nonprofit membership organization focused on collecting, preserving, interpreting, and sharing Indiana's history. It operates a research library and archives on Indiana and the Old Northwest, and presents visitor exhibitions known as the Indiana Experience. The organization is based in Indianapolis and maintains affiliations with the Smithsonian and the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience. It provides support to local museums and historical groups, publishes books and periodicals, and sponsors teacher workshops, as well as art exhibitions, museum theater, and outside performances, while offering programs for youth, adults, and families. In 2024, the society launched an interactive kiosk mapping sites significant to Black history in Indiana, reflecting its ongoing public-facing programming.
