The Indiana Writers Center supports Indiana writers at all levels and in all genres by educating, inspiring, connecting, and providing ongoing support, while also recognizing excellence in Indiana literature. It runs outreach programs designed to bring forward voices that are not typically heard and advocates for writing as essential to a community that values clear communication, diversity, tolerance, and compassion. Based in the Broad Ripple area of Indianapolis, it has operated for more than 30 years and is housed in the Cultural Complex of the Indianapolis Art Center. It offers classes and workshops led by Indiana writers and hosts literary events such as readings, open mics, critique groups, and the annual Gathering of Writers. Its outreach extends to schools, nursing homes, and correctional facilities, helping people of diverse ages and backgrounds to find their voices. A notable recent development is a 2021 partnership with Christian Theological Seminary to award a prize celebrating the power of poetry.
