The Indigenous Environmental Network is an international nonprofit focused on environmental justice, founded in 1990, that collaborates with tribal grassroots organizations to strengthen the capacity of Indigenous communities. Its programs aim to empower Indigenous communities and tribal governments to establish safeguards for sacred sites, land, water, air, and natural resources, and to promote the health of people and ecosystems while pursuing economically sustainable communities. The organization is based in Bemidji, Minnesota, and operates with a small to mid-sized team engaged in advocacy and capacity-building at local and international levels. In November 2023, it announced the Ethical Protocol for the Protection and Use of Traditional Indigenous Knowledge at a United Nations forum. It has also pursued partnerships and initiatives to advance Indigenous principles of just transition, including collaborations on education curricula.
