IFR is a small independent nonprofit focused on field training and international education within higher education. It offers hands-on programs in Archaeology, Anthropology, and Environmental Studies and collaborates with leading scholars worldwide; the programs are academically rigorous and peer-reviewed annually by an Academic Board to maintain high standards. Attendees must be 18 or older and may enroll regardless of their home university, and credits—eight semester units (twelve quarter credits)—are issued through its partner Connecticut College. IFR targets students seeking practical research experiences and international exposure by enabling cross-border recruitment of top participants from around the world. The organization is based in Los Angeles, California, and operates with a small team emphasizing student learning and supportive engagement throughout the application, enrollment, and field experience. In February 2023, IFR partnered with the Brasov Bioarchaeology Project to train students in osteological analysis and excavation at the fortified Saxon church in Sânpetru, Transylvania.
