The Institute for Fiscal Studies is a Britain-based independent research organization that analyzes microeconomic policy to inform public debate and fiscal decision-making. Its work covers tax and benefits, education policy, labor supply, and corporate taxation, producing rigorous research that informs policymakers, think tanks, and practitioners and contributes to academic scholarship. It also hosts the ESRC Centre for the Microeconomic Analysis of Public Policy, which studies how fiscal policy influences households, firms, saving, and public finances. Founded in 1969 and based in London, England, IFS operates as a mid-sized, independent research institute. It disseminates findings globally and provides independent policy advice to audiences in the UK, Europe, and developing countries; in May 2025, Nesta renewed its partnership with IFS to update the Be the Chancellor tool.
