The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is the global organization of national parliaments, founded in 1889 as the first multilateral political organization. It is based in Geneva, Switzerland, and comprises 181 national Member Parliaments. Through its biannual world assembly, the IPU brings together more than 1,500 parliamentary delegates and partners to connect parliamentary work with broader governance efforts, including the work of the United Nations and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Its mandate centers on promoting democracy and strengthening parliaments by encouraging improvement in inclusivity—making parliaments younger, more gender-balanced, and more diverse—and by defending the human rights of parliamentarians through a dedicated committee of MPs from around the world. A notable recent development is the late-2024 release of Guidelines for AI in parliaments, a framework intended to help legislatures understand and implement artificial intelligence responsibly.
