The International Cooperative Alliance is an independent non-governmental organization founded in 1895 to unite, represent, and serve cooperatives worldwide. It serves as a global platform for knowledge, expertise, and coordinated action on behalf of the cooperative movement. Its membership includes international and national cooperative bodies across sectors such as agriculture, banking, consumer, fisheries, health, housing, insurance, and workers, representing about one billion people from roughly 100 countries. It maintains a central office in Brussels in the Brussels-Capital Region and operates four regional offices covering Africa, the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe, along with sectoral groups for various cooperative activities. The ICA acts as custodian of cooperative values and principles and monitors progress toward the movement’s development goals, while supporting capacity building and disseminating best practices. In 2026, the organization launched a dedicated website for the Cooperatives of the Americas Global Conference to provide delegates with centralized information.
