Founded in 1998 in response to the World Health Organization’s efforts to eliminate blinding trachoma by 2020, the International Trachoma Initiative coordinates international actions to support this goal. Its initial partners were Pfizer and the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation, and the organization is based in Atlanta, Georgia. ITI collaborates with governments and non-governmental organizations at local, national, and international levels to implement the WHO-recommended SAFE strategy for trachoma control, which encompasses surgery, antibiotics using donated azithromycin, facial cleanliness, and environmental improvement. A concrete development highlighted in its history is the 2017 launch of the Zithromax Shipment Tracker, a tool to monitor the delivery of donated antibiotics as part of the program. The organization’s work centers on sustaining partnerships and resource alignment to support trachoma control and, ultimately, disease elimination.
