IREC is a national nonprofit organization focused on advancing clean, sustainable energy while safeguarding public interests. Since its founding in 1982, it has expanded access to sustainable energy and energy efficiency through independent, fact-based policy leadership, workforce development, and consumer empowerment. The organization operates across many states to build durable clean energy policies and to establish high standards for workforce training and related programs. By serving as a facilitator of policy and workforce quality, IREC supports the effective deployment and reliability of energy systems in the transition to a low-carbon economy. Headquartered in Latham, New York, IREC functions within the nonprofit sector and works with state and local governments, industry groups, and employers to advance policies, standards, and workforce programs for renewable energy and energy efficiency. In 2024, the organization launched Energy Ready, a Department of Energy–funded initiative developed with partners to assist local governments with technical guidance and recognition for progress in planning, zoning, and permitting distributed energy resources.
