Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) is a grassroots nonprofit organization focused on advancing investigative journalism. Founded in 1975 to create a forum for journalists worldwide to share story ideas, reporting methods, and sources, it supports practitioners through training and resources. Based in Columbia, Missouri, IRE provides members with access to thousands of reporting tip sheets and related materials, and it hosts conferences and specialized training across the country. Its programs include the National Institute for Computer Assisted Reporting, DocumentCloud and the Campus Coverage Project. Its mission is to foster excellence in investigative journalism by offering training, resources and a supportive community, promoting professional standards, protecting journalists' rights, and ensuring the organization's future. In May 2026, IRE announced the appointment of Lynnie McIlvain as director of development.
