The Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is a large research foundation based in Genoa, Liguria. It was established jointly by Italy’s Ministry of Education, Universities and Research and the Ministry of Economy and Finance to promote excellence in basic and applied research and to contribute to the country’s economic development. Its core objectives are to create and disseminate scientific knowledge while strengthening Italy’s technological competitiveness. To pursue these aims, IIT collaborates with academic institutions and private organizations, fostering scientific development, technological advances, and advanced training in high-technology areas. The institute maintains active partnerships with universities and industry to support research that translates into real-world applications. In 2026, it announced collaborations with Uppsala University and AstraZeneca to apply computational chemistry and supercomputing to better understand the fundamental mechanisms of human cells.
