iThemba LABS operates as a national research facility in South Africa, providing accelerator-based science infrastructure and related analytical services to the research community. It runs at two sites: Faure in the Western Cape, where a K=200 Separated Sector Cyclotron and a 6MV Van de Graaff accelerator are housed, and at the Wits University campus in Johannesburg, which hosts an EN Tandem Accelerator together with Neutron Activation Analysis and Environmental Isotope Analyses capabilities. It functions as a National Research Foundation facility, serving researchers across the country. iThemba LABS supports researchers by offering advanced accelerator capabilities and analytical facilities that enable isotope analyses and radiochemical work. Its recent infrastructure expansion includes the introduction of a 70MeV Cyclotron, announced in 2023, enhancing its capacity to produce radioisotopes and expand research opportunities. The organization is based in Somerset West, Western Cape, with operations across Gauteng, and serves the broader Southern Africa region.
