Jefferson Lab, officially the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, is a research institution located in Newport News, Virginia, operated by SURATech, LLC for the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science. Its core mission is to investigate the fundamental behavior of confined states of quarks and gluons, including the nucleons that comprise visible matter. The lab is a leading developer of accelerator technologies for its Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility, with applications across DOE laboratories and the international scientific community. DOE has designated Jefferson Lab to lead the High Performance Data Facility, a major computing and data infrastructure project intended to enhance data analysis, networking, and storage for the national research enterprise. In 2026 the lab began expanding with a 30,000-square-foot data center on its Newport News campus to support the HPDF and related data infrastructure efforts.
