The Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization (JIEDDO) is a U.S. Department of Defense–operated entity focused on reducing the impact of improvised explosive devices against U.S. and coalition forces. Reporting to the Deputy Secretary of Defense, its director serves as the principal adviser on IED defeat matters, coordinating and leading Defense actions to support combatant commands and joint task forces in counter-IED efforts. The organization concentrates its efforts along three main lines of operation—attacking the network, defeating the device, and training the force—and actively engages private industry to develop solutions. Based in the Washington, D.C. area, JIEDDO operates within the defense and space manufacturing landscape and has a workforce described in general terms as sizeable, reflecting its role within the DoD. A recent development noted involvement of external contractors in its mission, including contract activity with private firms to support its objectives.
