Junior State of America (JSA) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan educational organization that focuses on civics education for high school students. It seeks to strengthen American democracy by preparing youth for lifelong involvement and responsible leadership in a democratic society. As a student-led community, members engage in political dialogue, develop democratic leadership skills, think critically, advocate for their views, respect opposing perspectives, and learn to prioritize the public good over self-interest. Founded in 1934 and based in Oakland, California, JSA operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in the education sector. Over its history, the program has reached more than 500,000 students, and its alumni include elected officials, cabinet members, and leaders in media, business, and academia. In late 2023, the organization announced the retirement of its chief executive officer.
