The Jupiter Research Foundation is a nonprofit scientific research organization based in Los Altos, California, established in 2003. It develops and applies new technologies to monitor and understand the natural world and shares findings with the public and the academic community; when studies yield commercially valuable embodiments, such outcomes may be advanced through joint ventures or spin-off companies, as evidenced by the founding of Liquid Robotics, Inc. in 2007. Current research areas include instrumentation for oceanic studies, monitoring CO2 and ocean acidification, the electrical behavior of plants, humpback whale song, and HF radio propagation. In 2021, the foundation partnered with IBM to advance cetacean research, illustrating ongoing external collaboration.
