Kayla Cares 4 Kids helps sick kids feel better by providing entertainment and educational items to children’s hospitals, Ronald McDonald Houses and related pediatric facilities worldwide. To date, the organization has donated 50,000 items to 450 medical facilities in all 50 states, plus D.C., Puerto Rico, Quebec, S. Africa.
Founder and Chief Kid Officer Kayla Abramowitz began the organization at the age of 11. She knew what it was like to spend countless days in hospitals after being diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, Juvenile Arthritis and Eosinophilic Colitis. Kayla discovered the lack of recreational activities in place to offset the fear, pain and boredom hospital patients with chronic illnesses often experience.
Through Kayla’s efforts, Kayla Cares 4 Kids helps raise the spirit of young patients by identifying and providing what they need to stay engaged and motivated during their recovery process.
Kayla realized firsthand that the boredom from sitting in a hospital bed with nothing to do could lead to more pain. In order to combat this, she went around her neighborhood asking for DVDs that people did not watch anymore. Her goal seemed impossible - 100 DVDs. After three days of collecting, the amount of DVD’s stacked to the ceiling of her house was triple that number. Accordingly, she donated those first 300 DVDs she received to Nicklaus Children's Hospital. The idea blossomed from there. Her simple idea to combat pain through DVDs has now expanded to much more.
Since 2013, the organization has also donated DVD players, Game Consoles, Video Games, Televisions, Books and more to every children's hospital and Ronald McDonald House in the country, with a value of over $400,000.
Kayla Cares 4 Kids also regularly visits facilities in that treat sick kids and brings plenty of crafts for the patients and their siblings, with Kayla and student volunteers supervising the activities.
It's estimated that Kayla Cares 4 Kids has touched more than a quarter-of-a million lives.
