Since 1978, the actual year of incorporation, it has been my goal to produce the best playing bass possible. As a professional musician, I longed for a better, more comfortable bass. At that time there were no custom bass parts available, bridges, or even electronics other than what you could find in a music store. I designed the first prototype on paper in my New York apartment. Soon after, I began constructing a neck and body from scrap Pine to get try to get the shape just right. After a few more prototypes, custom circuit, bridge, and pick-up designs, Smith Basses were ready for purchase.
