Based in Bakersfield, California, Kern Delta Water District is a utilities district formed in 1965 under Division 13 of the State Water Code to safeguard Kern River water rights and to enable contracting water through the State Water Project. The district provides water to roughly 90,000 irrigated acres via five canals, drawing from Kern River and State sources with delivery by gravity flow. Its canal network spans more than 126 miles, reflecting irrigation infrastructure that predates the district by decades. In 2014, in response to California's Sustainable Groundwater Management Act, Kern Delta partnered with the City of Bakersfield and Kern County Water Agency's Improvement District No. 4 to establish the Kern River Groundwater Sustainability Agency to coordinate groundwater management.
