KIPP Delta Public Schools is a network of free, open-enrollment public charter schools offering a college-preparatory education to students in the Arkansas Delta. In 2002, we opened our doors to eager fifth graders in Phillips County — the poorest county in Arkansas and the 12th poorest in the nation. The class of 2010 has since grown into college-bound young adults, and the KIPP Delta network has expanded to include elementary, middle, and high schools, serving over 1,400 students. Nearly all of our students are African-American (90%), and 90% qualify for free and reduced-price school lunches. They are also proving that demography is not destiny, with ACT scores topping state and national averages and Arkansas End-of-Course Literacy Exam results at the top of the state. Our alumni are currently enrolled at top universities in Arkansas and across the country, including the University of Arkansas, Hendrix College, and Vanderbilt University — many with full scholarships. KIPP Delta shares five “pillars” with all KIPP schools: we have high expectations for academics and conduct regardless of students’ backgrounds; all students, parents, and faculty make a choice and commitment — choosing to be part of the school and committing to the extended school day, week, and year that allows more time to acquire the knowledge and skills that prepare them for college; school leaders have the power to lead and can do whatever it takes to maximize student learning; finally, KIPP focuses on results. No shortcuts, no excuses. Students are expected to achieve at a level that will enable them to succeed at the nation’s best colleges and universities.
