Kitchen Dog Theater is a Dallas-based performing arts company founded in 1990 by five graduates of the MFA Theater Program at Southern Methodist University who chose to remain in the city to enrich its artistic life. It maintains a resident company of more than 40 area artists, supporting local talent and sustaining a steady pool of collaborators. As a founding member of the National New Play Network, it helps advance new work and participates in a national alliance of theaters dedicated to developing contemporary plays. The organization's mission centers on examining justice, morality, and human freedom through theater that provokes thought and invites questioning rather than offering definitive answers. The name references Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot and signals an aim to challenge cycles of ignorance and injustice in society. In 2019, it partnered with Cry Havoc Theater Company on Crossing the Line, a documentary-style verbatim play.
